Colombia wants to open a consulate in Charlotte, North Carolina

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed hope that it would help the citizens of the Queen City.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte will be home to a new consulate office serving Colombian nationals in the Queen City.

Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that it has requested the opening of five new offices in the United States. According to the ministry’s statement, the purpose of the consulate is to meet the needs of Colombian citizens in the US and protect their rights and well-being.

In addition to Charlotte, Colombia wants to open consulates in Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Phoenix, AZ; and Seattle, Washington. The ministry also wants to redistribute some of its consular districts.

“Together with U.S. authorities, we are making significant progress toward establishing new consulates and are working with local authorities in appropriate states, including North Carolina, to establish new consular districts. Our goal is to ensure these consulates are fully operational as soon as the bilateral process is completed,” said Mercedes Osma-Peralta, spokeswoman for the Colombian Embassy.

Osma-Peralta said details on the exact location of the Charlotte consulate office are still being finalized and promised to share more details in the future, including an opening date.
