Coalition to fight changes to the Baltimore property tax law

A coalition of labor unions, activist groups and city officials are joining forces to fight a ballot amendment that would cap and lower Baltimore City’s property tax rate.

A group called Renew Baltimore is proposing a plan to go to voters in the form of a November charter amendment that — spread over seven years — would reduce the property tax rate by about 46% before the rate is then capped.

Members of the newly formed group Baltimore City Not For Sale say it will cost the city hundreds of millions, leaving Baltimore struggling to pay for public schools, sanitation and services such as ambulances and police.
