Vigil for teenagers tonight; Others are recovering – CCN

Friends, family and classmates of Kaiden Powell will gather at Whiteville High School tonight to remember the athlete who was killed in a car crash minutes after classes ended Friday.

Kaiden Mautrel Powell

Kaiden Powell, 16, was killed around noon Friday in a 2009 Cadillac crash on Sunset Drive. His brother Kainen Powell is in critical condition at Novant New Hanover. Joshua Lacewell and Kamari Smith are also recovering from injuries.

According to the highway patrol, a northbound car lost control while passing another vehicle on Sunset Road, left the roadway and struck a ditch. Three teenagers were ejected and one was partially ejected from the overturned vehicle.

The teenagers were remembered with a moment of silence during the WHS graduation ceremony on Saturday. All four played JV football, and the Powell brothers reportedly planned to join the varsity team this fall.

“We are united in prayer for these families,” Superintendent Jonathan Williams said Friday. “I don’t know all the details right now, but hearts are very heavy.”

The service will be held at 8 p.m. at the WHS campus on Lee Street in Whiteville.
