Florida is feeling the impact of tropical moisture, and according to the latest tropical forecasts, a system now called Invest 90L has appeared on the National Hurricane Center’s tropical map.

A system over the eastern Gulf of Mexico is expected to move northeast across Florida, producing heavy rain in parts of Florida over the next few days. AccuWeather said nearly two feet of rain could fall in some areas.

NHC forecasters say slow development is possible as long as the system remains in the Gulf of Mexico. The investment has a 10 percent chance of developing in the next 48 hours and a 20 percent chance in the next seven days.

The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring three tropical waves.

If no named storms appear over the next week, it will be only the third time since 1970 — in 1994 and 2009 — that no named storms have appeared in the Western Hemisphere through June 17, according to Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University specializing in meteorology. in seasonal hurricane forecasts in the Atlantic basin.

How much rain can Florida expect this week?

Tropical moisture pulled north into the Sunshine State could bring as much as 22 inches of rain to some areas, and up to 15 inches could fall in a few locations this week. Up to 20 inches were seen in Fort Myers, according to the National Weather Service.

According to AccuWeather, a “budding tropical storm” is forecast to bring repeated rounds of heavy rainfall to the Sunshine State throughout the week.

“While there is no indication that a tropical system will quickly form and intensify, there is a chance that the downpours will organize enough to become a named tropical system.”

The reason for this week’s repeated downpours, which are helping ease drought conditions on the peninsula, is that there is nothing in the atmosphere to carry them.

“In the absence of other storms approaching or strong jet winds moving the storm, heavy rain will be able to accumulate in the eastern and central Gulf of Mexico, pumping rich tropical moisture into Florida for days,” he added. AccuWeather said.

Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Florida over the next few days as a low pressure system moves through the state and into the Atlantic.

Tropical downpours are expected to move into South Florida on Tuesday and spread further north over the course of the week.

AccuWeather meteorologists expect tropical downpours to bring 8 to 12 inches of rain to Southwest Florida. Some areas could see up to 22 inches. A rainfall zone of at least 4 inches is expected to extend north and east into the Tampa Bay area and on the Atlantic side from Miami to Orlando.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and always be prepared. This advice is especially important with a very active hurricane season expected.
