The legendary HFStival from DC returns with a dream rock lineup

Break out the faded striped tees and wraparound sunglasses from storage: it’s time. HFStival returns to DC so you can watch the ’90s, too – if you get tickets to the festival, which takes place on September 21 at Nationals Park.

HFStival, launched by alternative rock station WHFS in 1990, was the biggest concert of the year in Washington, D.C. during the 1990s and early 2000s. Bands like No Doubt, Violent Femmes and Ramones filled RFK Stadium with electric sounds and screaming fans.

In the mid-1990s, attendance exceeded 50,000 and tickets sold out in less than two hours. Now IMP, the parent company of 9:30 Club, brings nostalgia-filled bands from the past (1990s and 2000s) to Nationals Park. When he staged the revived HFStivals at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2010 and 2011, he relied heavily on 1990s lineups, and this year’s is no exception.

Here’s who will come to HFStival 2024:

  • Postal Service.
  • Death Cab for Cutie.
  • Bane.
  • A Bush.
  • Garbage.
  • Jimmy Eat the World.
  • Girl talking.
  • Brutal women.
  • Tonic.
  • Filter.
  • Illuminated.

HFStival veterans will note that for the first time since 1993, the festival had one stage – later there were four, including a dance tent – and for the first time since 1990, no local band appeared on the announced stage. composition. (Was Jimmy’s Chicken Hut unavailable?)

In a statement to The Washington Post, Jen Hass, co-director of reservations at IMP, said that “for many people, HFStival represents a nostalgic moment. The festival has always been known for being heavily rock-based… but the lineup also featured Coldplay, Jewel or Tony Bennett. …We wanted to bring together bands that were part of the original HFStival, as well as those that never had the chance to play but have built their careers to date – all for one day on one stage.”

As with last year’s initial lineup of Atlantis shows, tickets will be sold through a lottery system where hopeful headbangers will request tickets, provide payment details (for which they will only be charged if their request is successful) and find out are they lucky to have tickets secured.

Prepare for sticker shock: a standing seat in the pit in front of the stage costs $250 plus service fees. Reserved seats on the field or in the lower stands are $250 plus fees; seats on the upper levels or side of the stage are $150 plus fees. VIP tickets, which cost $475 each and must be ordered in pairs, include a complimentary draft beer and “pitch ticket,” as well as access to exclusive areas including VIP restrooms, air conditioning and the “Dugout Lounge” located inside the baseball fields, as well as T-shirts and other gadgets. (For comparison, in 2004, the last year at RFK Stadium, tickets were sold through Ticketmaster for $40 plus fees.)

Ticket requests must be submitted by June 16 at 11:59 PM EST, and confirmation emails must be sent on the evening of June 21.
