Pirates recall Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis

The Pittsburgh Pirates have filled the void left by recently designated Ben Heller by recalling relief pitcher Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis.

This will be Ryan’s fourth appearance in the big leagues for the Pirates this season after he cracked the club’s Opening Day lineup prior to spring training. He is 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA in 11 relief appearances in Pittsburgh. The right-hander pitched a total of 13 innings, walking 7 of them and recording 14 strikeouts.

Ryan, who had just one inning of major league experience at the start of the season, recorded his first MLB win in the Pirates’ 7-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on March 29.

Ryan has made 10 total appearances out of the bullpen in Indianapolis and has an ERA of 3.77.

On Monday, the Pirates designated Heller for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum, who was recalled from the Los Angeles Angels.

Heller had two poor performances for the Pirates after his contract was selected a week ago. The right-hander allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in two appearances, totaling two innings.

Meanwhile, Goodrum was transferred to Indianapolis after being reported. He appeared in 13 games between the Angels and Tampa Bay Rays this season, earning 3 of 29 starts.
