Boston Massachusetts ranked 12th best in the US for recreation

Boston, Massachusetts

As New Englanders, you don’t need us to tell you that Boston is a city that will provide you with plenty of physical activity if you’re looking for it. Whether you enjoy walking long distances, going to the playground, playing tennis or basketball, Boston has plenty of places to have fun for you and your family, so much so that Beantown was named one of the 12 best cities in the country in terms of recreation.

According to WalletHub, recreation in each city in the country was ranked based on the number of public golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, basketball hoops, baseball and softball diamonds, parks and playgrounds.

The rankings also took into account the availability of recreational places and the number of walking trails, bicycle paths and shopping centers.

If you’re looking for an example of a good walk in Boston, check out the Freedom Trail. This is one of my favorites because it has the most stories about the American Revolution to discover. You will likely encounter many runners and other walkers on this route. It’s just over three miles and quite easy.

If you’re just looking for a scenic route, check out the Neponset River Preserve. It’s a scenic and easy walk.

Portland, Maine, ranked second in the nation for recreational destinations

Boston isn’t the only city to make the list. Portland, Maine, ranked even higher, taking second place in the recreation category. In my opinion, the entire state of Maine should excel when it comes to recreation. These are the best hiking trails in the country, but I may be biased.

10 stars who ran the Boston Marathon
