Baltimore Ravens get three more years of Mike Tomlin

John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens is the NFL’s second-longest-tenured coach as he enters his 17th season with the team, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be moving up to the top of that list any time soon.

That’s because Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who is entering his 18th season in the Steel City, signed a three-year contract extension on Monday that will keep him with the team through at least the 2027 season.

This news will likely come as a disappointment to any Ravens fans who were hoping for a trade for Tomlin soon, but given his stay in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future, it’s worth taking a look back at his run-ins with Baltimore over the years.

Since Tomlin’s arrival in 2007, the Steelers are 21-16 against their main rivals. This included a 2-1 record in the playoffs, and perhaps the most notable matchup was the Steelers’ 23-14 victory in the 2008 AFC Championship Game. Pittsburgh has also had a significant advantage in the competition recently, winning seven of eight matchups against Baltimore in the 2020s.

In terms of overall team success, both teams are fairly comparable over this time frame. Both teams played relatively regularly in the playoffs, made multiple appearances in the AFC Championship Game, and had one Super Bowl each (Pittsburgh in 2008 and Baltimore in 2012). The Steelers had an extra Super Bowl appearance in 2010, but otherwise what was remarkable was how similar their results were.

Even though they are fierce rivals on the field, it is abundantly clear that the Ravens have great admiration for Tomlin and his work with the Steelers.

“I have a lot of respect and love for Coach Tomlin, the Steelers organization and the players,” Harbaugh previously said.

Tomlin managed to put together an incredible streak of undefeated seasons in Pittsburgh, and as long as he and Harbaugh are still on the team, games between the two AFC North foes will continue to be must-see television.
