A pedestrian was fatally hit in the square

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a pedestrian Monday evening on the Plaza.

Officers responded to the accident around 10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located a 2018 BMW 430i with damage to the front grill, hood and windshield and a male pedestrian, identified as 65-year-old Sugar Robinson, lying in the road.

Doctors on scene pronounced Robinson dead from injuries sustained when struck by a vehicle.

The BMW driver remained at the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that Robinson was crossing The Plaza outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the BMW. The driver was assessed for impairment and was found to have no impairments. Further investigation will determine whether speed was a factor in this crash. We are waiting for Robinson’s toxicology results.
