A look back at the school year with the CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools

The Baltimore public school system is led by one of the longest-serving school superintendents in the country. Dr. Sonja Santelises joins South on education to look back at the school year, which ends on Thursday, June 13.

Last month, the Baltimore City Public Schools board approved a $1.8 billion budget that includes a new $4.5 million math curriculum and $6 million for preschool materials. The city’s math scores have long been among the lowest in the state, and eighth-grade English scores began to recover from the pandemic last year.

We ask Santelises about the future of the school system, test scores and ongoing negotiations over her contract, which have stalled as her term expires in a few weeks.
