Woman tries to set fire to duplex with 6 children inside after eviction: MPD

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After being evicted, a woman tried to set her duplex on fire while her six children were inside, according to Memphis police.

Blanche Coe, 61, is charged with arson and vandalism of $1,000 or less.

On Wednesday, officers responded to a report of an incident at a two-family home in the 3200 block of Macon Road.

The maintenance man told officers that Coe had been evicted and that all of her belongings had been placed on the curb. He was changing the locks when Coe allegedly became disruptive.

She said, “If I can’t live here, no one else will,” then grabbed a small can of gas and went to a gas station, police said.

Reports say Coe returned without gas but continued to make threatening comments. She grabbed a bottle of lighter fluid and began spraying it on the porch carpet.

According to reports, a neighbor jumped Coe to stop her from setting fire to the duplex because she had six children at home. She reportedly held her until police arrived.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers seized an empty canister of gasoline and lighter fluid.

Blanch Coe is due in court on Thursday morning.
