Wichita State’s Jackson Caldwell and Charlotte’s Riley Felts Named American Athletic Conference Male Athletes of the Year

IRVING, Texas – Commissioner Tim Pernetti announced that Wichita State cross-country standout Jackson Caldwell and Charlotte track and field athlete Riley Felts have been named the 2023-24 American Athletic Conference Male Athletes of the Year by the conference’s Academic Committee.

Caldwell, who was named Athlete-Teacher of the Year by The American magazine, and Felts, the Female Athlete-Teacher of the Year by The American magazine, will each receive $4,000 in post-graduate scholarships.

Caldwell and Felts were selected from a group of 23 individual scholarship athletes of the year who received $2,000 postgraduate scholarships. The 23 scholarship athletes of the year include 10 individuals who earned individual conference honors or received conference Player of the Year honors in the 2023-24 season.

“I am proud to present the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards to 23 of our outstanding student-athletes,” said Pernetti. “And I am especially pleased to recognize Jackson Caldwell and Riley Felts as our male and female student-athletes of the year, the best of the best. Jackson and Riley join an impressive list of champions and scholarship recipients who have earned these awards and set the highest standards for all of our student-athletes.”

Caldwell, a native of Overland Park, Kansas, becomes the second consecutive Wichita State student-athlete to be named The American’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year after former Shockers baseball player Brock Rodden received the honor in 2023. Caldwell earned all-conference honors at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Championships, where he set a Shockers program record in the 8,000 meters (23:31.7), placed in the top 25 at the 2022 and 2023 conference championships and helped Wichita State earn two second-place team finishes (2021, 2022).

Caldwell has a 3.99 grade point average in his aerospace engineering major, and his semester grade point average was 4.00 in five of his six semesters.

Felts, a native of Matthews, N.C., becomes the first Charlotte student-athlete to be named The American’s Scholar Athlete of the Year. Felts was a runner-up in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, the highest individual score in school history in any sport. She is a six-time conference champion who helped the 49ers win all of the indoor and outdoor team titles in Charlotte’s first year at The American.

Felts earned a 4.00 grade point average as an undergraduate and has a 3.90 grade point average in Charlotte’s civil engineering graduate program. She won the Charlotte Provost Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award as the 49ers’ top all-around student-athlete and was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America first team.

The 23 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, as well as the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, are selected by the Academic Committee based on academic and athletic achievement. Each conference school may nominate one student-athlete in each sport who has achieved the highest academic level as determined by the institution. The winner is selected from each of the 21 conference-sponsored sports, as well as from among individuals selected from all non-conference-sponsored sports.
