Which Denver Broncos players will you be focusing on during training camp?

Good morning, Broncos Country.

The Denver Broncos finished the season with an 8-9 record and finished second in the AFC West under coach Sean Payton in 2023. This season, the Broncos have much bigger aspirations and hope to be a playoff contender. They have a lot of work to do to get there, but the real excitement will come in a little over two weeks when training camp officially begins.

The franchise made a myriad of changes in the offseason and added a number of players through free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft. The biggest addition was the selection of Oregon quarterback Bo Nix in the first round. It’s too early to tell, but many assume he’ll win a starting job in training camp and immediately hit the ground running as a rookie.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Nix is one of the players I’m most focused on in training camp this year. Honestly, I’m not particularly interested in watching Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson play quarterback this upcoming season. And honestly, I’m not sure why any fan in all of Broncos Country would want to.

In addition to Nix, I’m also curious to see what wide receiver Marvin Mims will look like in his second season with the team. After some big plays early in the year, Mims’ usage waned as last season progressed. Payton spoke of regretting that during the offseason, and Mims seemed to be the proverbial Missing man on milk carton regarding the Broncos’ offensive efforts in 2023.

If the Broncos’ offense is going to improve from last year’s 19th-place finish in points and 26th in yards, getting Mims more throws is absolutely essential. I expect him to have at least 80 targets this season. By comparison, he had just 33 all of last season, which is basically just two targets per game. That needs to change in 2024.

Defensively, I’m eager to see John Franklin-Myers help improve the Broncos’ defensive line. That unit struggled mightily last year, especially in the run game. Hopefully, his quality play will help strengthen the unit as a whole and improve its overall effectiveness in 2024.

I’m also intrigued by second-year defensive back Riley Moss, who missed most of last year with an injury. The Broncos traded a future third-round pick to secure him two drafts ago. It’ll be interesting to see where he’s deployed in their defensive second line. For now, I’d expect early reps at the perimeter, but also time at nickelback, given his versatility.

How about you? Which players are you most looking forward to seeing during training camp? Are there any players you think will surprise and play a bigger role than we think? Let us know in the comments!

As always, thanks for reading. Here’s today’s roundup of articles (and videos) for Horse tracks.
