Tyson Campbell “He’s the type of guy the Jaguars are going to want to pay”

After Trevor Lawrence and Josh Hines-Allen signed record-breaking contracts during the offseason, it is becoming increasingly clear who the Jacksonville Jaguars may be looking to extend.

The Jaguars have no shortage of options between cornerback Tyson Campbell, running back Travis Etienne, safety Andre Cisco, offensive lineman Walker Little, and eventual pass rusher Travon Walker and linebacker Devin Lloyd. However, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Campbell could lead the pack.

“The Jaguars obviously spent money on free agents, but what they wanted to do is owner Shad Khan, who a few days ago said, ‘We can’t be dependent on free agents.’ Well, OK, they have some really good players on their roster who are going to end up getting big paydays,” Rapoport said.

“I’ll point out Tyson Campbell, a young cornerback who I think has very quietly developed into one of the better young cornerbacks in the NFL. At some point, whether it’s this year, free agency, whenever, he’s going to be one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL. The stats aren’t great, but the coverage is great. That’s the kind of guy the Jaguars are going to want to pay and build around.”

Campbell, the 33rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, missed Weeks 7 and 8 of last year with an injury, eventually returning to the lineup in Week 10 after a week off. Campbell then missed Weeks 11, 12, 14 and 15. And when Campbell was in the lineup, he was far from his 100 percent self.

After throwing 25 interceptions and five fumble recoveries in his first two seasons, Campbell has one interception and five pass breakups in 11 games in 2023, the least productive year of his career.

Campbell’s injury tested the Jaguars’ defensive depth, and the Jaguars’ pass defense fell off a cliff in the second half of the season. But with his 2023 injury woes now far behind him, Campbell is back in the No. 1 cornerback role as he enters the biggest year of his career.
