Three dogs found dead in moving van parked in Mattapan

Three dead dogs were found in a U-Haul truck in Mattapan on Tuesday, according to Boston police.

Police responded to a report of a pickup truck on Edgewater Drive that had a “terrible odor and bugs inside,” according to a police report. The van was unlocked and had not been reported stolen, police said.

The van was reportedly parked in the area for at least a week.

“For a couple of weeks until we smell something really awful, like a dead body,” one neighbor told station WCVB, which reported that the dogs were pit bull mixes.

An animal control officer arrived and found three medium-sized dogs inside the van. They were dead and bloated, the report said.

Boston police have heard from multiple neighbors who heard barking coming from a van during a Fourth of July fireworks display. One neighbor said he saw the dogs alive earlier this week. Officers said there was no identifying information about the tenant in the U-Haul.

Another neighbor said someone was using the truck for work and moving it every day. He said he saw the man with the dog Monday, according to a police report.

Animal Control took the dogs away and the U-Haul was towed for examination, police said. The investigation is ongoing, police said, and anyone with information should call detectives at (617) 343-5607.
