The Hornets need to sign this Summer League standout for one obvious reason

By their first few games The Charlotte Hornets played solidly in the Summer League, with the strong Jake Stephens standing out from the rest of the field.

Stephens is a 24-year-old big man who spent the 2023-24 season in the G League with the Capital City Go-Go, an affiliate of the Washington Wizards. He has played well in his minutes.

The center appeared in 30 games, playing an average of 18.5 minutes per game. He averaged 8.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 57.9% from the field and 31.8% from three-point range.

However, Stephens started earning real money in the Summer League, starting in one of three games. And when he was on the court, he looked like a guy the Hornets need to sign next season.

In three games, Stephens played an average of 19.0 minutes per game. He averaged 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while shooting 56.5% from the field and 50.0% from three-point range on 4.7 three-point attempts per game.

Stephens’ game certainly has its pros and cons. On the one hand, he’s an impressive long-range shooter, has a good touch around the basket and is big at 6-foot-11, 270 pounds. On the other hand, he’s a bit slow, needs to work on his defensive positioning and his 3-point shooting wasn’t consistent last year.

Still, Stephens has a history of being a good three-point shooter. his last season in Chatanooga In 2022-23, Stephens shot 40.8% from distance, averaging 5.2 attempts per game.

Because of this, the Hornets must sign him to a two-way or standard contract.

How their composition currently looks as followsCharlotte has just two centers — Mark Williams and Nick Richards. Stephens could be an interesting project as a third big man on the roster.

But neither Williams nor Richards are three-point shooters. That’s a big reason Stephens needs to be signed by the Hornets. He’d give them a different perspective at the center position.

With five players in the squad, Charles Lee could be a force to be reckoned with, and if they can work with Stephens on his physique and defensive positioning, he could prove to be a real prize.
