Soccer fans pack Charlotte for the Copa America semifinals at Bank of America Stadium

Uptown Charlotte will host an event on Wednesday as thousands of soccer fans gather for the Copa America semifinals at Bank of America Stadium.

Wednesday’s match between Colombia and Uruguay will start at 20:00

Uruguay eliminated the United States from the tournament on July 1, defeating them 1-0.

If you didn’t drop a few hundred dollars to watch the game at the stadium, there are plenty of events happening in Charlotte where you can get in on the action. That includes celebrations at Lowe’s on S. Tryon Street and at bars dotted around Uptown.

The losing team from Wednesday’s game will face Canada in a third-place playoff in Charlotte on Saturday.

The winning team will travel to the Copa America final in Miami on Sunday to face Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina. Camp North End is hosting a party on Sunday to watch the final match, with live music.

Match draws international crowd to Uptown

This is the first time the tournament has come to Charlotte and the second consecutive year that FIFA’s regional international competition has been held at Bank of America Stadium.

Wednesday’s game is expected to draw the largest football crowd of the year, with 70,000 fans representing all 50 states and about 60 countries, with two-thirds of those attending having driven more than 100 miles to be there.

>>Tune in on Channel 9 tonight to see how the city handles the crowd and how the atmosphere is a little different than a typical Charlotte FC game.
