Seattle Mariners’ biggest rival suffers serious injury, division battle looms

Entering Wednesday night’s play, the Seattle Mariners lead the Houston Astros by 2.0 points in the American League West race.

The M’s haven’t won a division title since 2001 and will need to find a way to avoid defeat by Houston if they are to achieve their goal of winning the division and securing a home game in the American League playoffs.

While trying to accomplish that, the Astros now face more bad injury news.

According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome on social media:

Lance McCullers Jr. has been sidelined because his shoulder wasn’t responding well between bullpen sessions, Joe Espada said. McCullers will not pitch for a few days while the team figures out a plan moving forward.

It’s been a difficult career for McCullers, who is exceptionally talented when healthy. The 30-year-old missed all of 2019, most of 2022 and all of 2023 due to injury.

Lifetime, he is 49-32 with a 3.48 ERA. He dominated the Mariners in the 2022 playoffs, throwing 6.0 shutout innings at T-Mobile Park in Game 3 that eliminated the M’s from the playoffs.

He helped the Astros win the World Series in 2017. While Mariners fans undoubtedly want the M’s to win the division, they don’t want it to come at the expense of players who would hurt their careers.

In addition to McCullers’ injury, the Astros will be without Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy this year. Luis Garcia is also recovering from Tommy John surgery, and we recently learned that JP France will miss the season.

On Wednesday night, the Mariners will play the Padres, while the Astros will host the Miami Marlins.
