Jorge Polanco converted both of those points to help the AL West-leading Mariners win a two-game series and hand the Padres their fourth straight loss.

Miller (7-7) is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in six starts against NL opponents. The right-handed pitcher has gone at least six innings without giving up a run for the fourth time this season.

Rodríguez struck out four times on four hits and a home run Tuesday night in an 8-3 victory. The dynamic center fielder made the game’s defensive play in the second inning when he threw out Donovan Solano at home trying to score on a Ha-Seong Kim fly ball.

Rodriguez’s throw from center field bounced near the pitcher’s mound before catcher Cal Raleigh intercepted it and threw out the sliding Solano.

The Padres had three consecutive hits, loading the bases with one out, but came back empty-handed.

San Diego mounted one final threat in the ninth inning, with Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado drawing walks to lead off and advancing to second and third base on a Donovan Solano grounder. They were left to fend for themselves when Jackson Merrill was thrown out and David Peralta grounded out to shortstop J.P. Crawford to give Andrés Muñoz his 15th save.

Padres starter Michael King (7-6) had nine strikeouts in six innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits.

The Mariners opened the scoring in the second inning when Cal Raleigh scored from second base after a ball thrown by Jorge Polanco fell between the legs of first baseman Luis Arraez and landed in right field.

Polanco extended the lead to two points in the fourth inning when he fired a single to center field to score Luke Raley.

Mariners: OF Dominic Canzone was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right groin strain. He underwent an MRI before the game to determine how long he might be out.

Padres: 2B Xander Bogaerts (left shoulder fracture) began a two-game rehab program with Class A Lake Elsinore on Wednesday night.

Mariners: Begin a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, with RHP Luis Castillo (7-9, ERA 3.72) on the mound.

Padres: RHP Randy Vásquez (2-4, ERA 4.66) will be called up on Friday to start the weekend series against the Atlanta Braves.
