Members-Only Raceway Moves Forward With Development East of DIA

WATKINS, Colo. — Residents in a Watkins neighborhood say a major racetrack being built nearby has no place in their rural neighborhood, and they’re concerned about the noise it will create.

When Lisa Tublet de Nermont’s family moved to Watkins more than a decade ago, they had two things in mind.

“We came here for some peace and quiet,” she said.

Her backyard overlooks wheat fields and is within easy reach of Denver International Airport.

“But planes come and go, they don’t constantly circle over our house,” Tublet de Nermont said.

She and her neighbors have learned to live with the noise over the years, but a new, potentially noisy neighbor is adding another nuisance: a large racetrack is planned for construction on a nearby plot.

“We went to a couple of meetings in Adams County and started protesting, trying to convince them not to do it,” said Benjie Blase, who has lived nearby for 20 years.

The application for the project was approved two years ago and its implementation is progressing, despite protests from neighbours.

Ascent Drive Resort offers nearly four miles of road course, a 160-acre terrain park and more than 750 garages. The private, members-only racetrack has annual dues starting at $7,500.

“I think it doesn’t fit here. I think you can’t come and buy cheap agricultural land and then turn it into commercial land. That, in my opinion, is wrong,” Tablet de Nermont told Nermont.

Adams County officials declined to be interviewed, but said they held a series of public hearings while the application was being considered. They said any property owner in the county who fails to comply with standards or regulations, such as noise, could be cited for violations.

“I understand. They want revenue. I want growth, I understand, but it has to be managed growth and not just let someone come in here with millions of dollars and do whatever they want,” Blase said.
