Louisville schools help families affected by road cuts

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As Jefferson County Public Schools prepares to start classes again, some families will soon be able to sign up for a transportation scholarship offered by the district.

  • Jefferson County Public Schools Offers Scholarships to Families of Students Whose Bus Routes Have Been Eliminated
  • The district will offer families $5 for each day a student attends classes.
  • Those who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch will receive $10
  • Classes at JCPS will begin on Thursday, August 8

Earlier this year, the JCPS school board made the decision to eliminate a significant number of bus routes due to a driver shortage.

In hopes of easing the stress of some families who now have to drive their children to school, the district will offer them $5 per school day. The pay will increase to $10 if the student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.

“You are eligible for benefits if you are no longer receiving JCPS transportation due to the decision to discontinue transportation at the majority of our facilities,” said Carolyn Callahan, JCPS Chief of Communications.

Callahan added that the district will not pay for students’ absent days.

“The decision on whether you will study at multiple schools and whether this will involve receiving multiple scholarships has not been made yet,” she said.

District officials are still working out how and when the money will reach families.

“It’s taxable income, so they’ll have to provide some information to sign up. That information will be sent out in early August to eligible families,” Callahan said.

Callahan said she is not yet sure how many families will benefit from the scholarship or how much it will cost the district.

The family of a student who lost transportation and did not miss a day of school may receive up to $850 ($1,700 for free or reduced-price lunch eligibility).

Classes at JCPS will begin on Thursday, August 8.
