Louisville Cardinals 2024 Stats Prediction: CFP Odds and More

The Atlantic Coast Conference title race is expected to be wide open in 2024, with Louisville standing out as one of the shortlisted contenders. The Cardinals are coming off a 10-4 season under head coach Jeff Brohm, which saw them rise to No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 and earn a No. 15 seed in the college football playoffs.

Building on that success will be difficult, but Louisville has what it takes to rise to the challenge.

To take a closer look at this Cardinals team, let’s examine the possible stats for the 2024 Louisville Cardinals team.

Cardinals aim for ACC title

Jeff Brohm returned to lead Louisville to 10 wins and an ACC title game appearance in his first season as head coach. The Cardinals (10-4, 7-2 ACC) eventually made it to the Holiday Bowl, where they lost 42-28 to USC.

What can he do for an encore?

The Cardinals have what it takes to compete again in 2024. A return to the AP Top 25 should be the bare minimum as Brohm and company hope to dethrone Florida State and become the ACC’s top team.

Louisville rebuilt through the transfer portal, acquiring quarterback Tyler Shough (Texas Tech) and wide receiver Caullin Lacy (South Alabama) to bolster an offense that averaged 30.7 points with Jack Plummer at quarterback.

The defense is in good shape with the return of linebacker Austin Gillotte and cornerback Quincy Riley.

The schedule is not overwhelming, leaving Louisville in a position to compete for a spot in the expanded playoff field. The Cardinals should be undefeated before traveling to Notre Dame on Sept. 28. They are helped by the fact that they do not play Florida State.

What Can Bettors Expect? Let’s break down the Louisville Cardinals’ projected stats for 2024.

Championship Odds: Good, but Not Enough

The uncertainty at quarterback largely explains the skepticism. Shough is at his third school after stops at Oregon and Texas Tech. Shough, a seven-year senior, started 13 games in three injury-plagued seasons with the Red Raiders. He is 13-7 overall as a college starter.

If Shough stays healthy and plays to his potential, Louisville could see Florida State and Clemson atop the ACC. But even in the best-case scenario, the Cardinals aren’t ready to compete with teams like Georgia, Alabama, Michigan and Ohio State for a national championship. They simply aren’t, and nothing that happens this season will change that.

When betting on a national championship, punters should focus their attention on something else.

Conference Courses: Shortlisted candidates

The Cardinals are among the favorites in the revamped ACC, with the fourth-best odds (+650) behind Florida State (+290), Clemson (+350) and Miami (+400). In all, five schools are priced at 7/1 or better, making this one of the more intriguing races among the Power Five conferences.

Louisville will visit Clemson (Nov. 2), but will skip Florida State and NC State and face Miami at home (Oct. 19).

None of the new players will be significant, except for SMU (+1600). California and Stanford are longshots at best.

Louisville will be in the game from the start.

Regular Season Wins: A Reasonable Goal to Achieve

Louisville has topped that number only twice in the past eight seasons, but the arrow is pointing up. The Cardinals have moved up to No. 9 in the AP Top 25 for 2023, their first top-10 finish since 2016 (No. 3) under Bobby Petrino.

The early interconference schedule is manageable, with the exception of a trip to Notre Dame, and the Cardinals don’t have to worry about playing Florida State.

The Cardinals will need to show they can win in tough conditions as four of their final five regular-season games will be on the road, ending Nov. 30 at rival Kentucky.

Is there a chance to participate in the play-offs?

Can Louisville win the ACC? That’s what it comes down to.

If not, the Cardinals likely won’t have a strong enough resume to succeed as an all-around team, especially against schools from stronger conferences like the Big Ten and SEC.

For that reason, the Cardinals could do themselves a huge favor by beating Notre Dame. Keep that in mind when evaluating the potential stats of the Louisville Cardinals in 2024.

Shough Longshot Heisman Play

Shough is unlikely to win the Heisman. The odds (+12,000) suggest so.

Still, he could flourish under Brohm, one of the ACC’s most aggressive playmakers. Louisville boasted the ACC’s third-best scoring attack last season in college football, averaging more than 30 points per game.

If Shough stays healthy, he’ll put up big numbers. And there’s nothing Heisman voters love more than big numbers.
