Jayson Tatum sends strong message to media after Celtics win in Finals

The road to Banner 18 was surrounded by outside noise and doubt. Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics. After years of coming close but falling short, Tatum’s Cs found themselves the target of nationwide criticism.

Pundits and panelists have consistently questioned the star forward’s ability to be the best player on a championship team and whether he should be viewed as one of the NBA’s best players. Even during this year’s playoff run, many have pointed to Boston’s strong supporting cast as a reason for the team’s success — seemingly in an effort to crush Tatum.

Now that the job is done, he no longer cares what the talking heads have to say.

“They can argue about a lot of things — is he the best player, is he top five? They can’t argue about the fact that I won a championship, that’s something they can’t take away from me,” Tatum said during an appearance on the “Old Man and the Three” podcast. “I sleep a lot better at night.”

While JT didn’t have to carry as much of the load as he did in previous seasons, he was still a driving force behind the Celtics’ championship run, leading the team in scoring, assists and rebounds.

His commitment to all-around play, regardless of how many points he scored, was something that impressed coaches across the league, with the 26-year-old revealing that one member of Team USA’s coaching staff praised him for dominating all areas in the playoffs.

“Early in my career, I was so defined — or wanted to be defined — by scoring,” Tatum explained. “If I had nights where I didn’t score, it would have affected other things I did on the court.”

His all-round skills were undoubtedly felt, helping the team win the title and giving him peace of mind for the future.

“I don’t care. Honestly, I don’t care what they say anymore,” he continued. “It’s like, ‘Hey, I did it.’ The thing they said I couldn’t do, I did.”
