However, Target will not be coming to Midtown Detroit

Plans to open a Target store in downtown Detroit have been canceled.

City Club Apartments LLC confirmed Wednesday that Target will no longer be a tenant in the mixed-use complex planned for the corner of Woodward and Mack streets.

“Yes, the Target deal is off. We will announce a new national retailer in the future. We have no further comment at this time,” Peter Burgoyne, chief brand officer for City Club Apartments LLC, wrote in an email Wednesday.

Joe Unger, a Target spokesman, on Wednesday addressed the company’s earlier response to the withdrawal, which was first reported by Crain’s Detroit Business.

“As we announced in January, due to ongoing delays and complications with the project, we no longer intend to open a store at this location,” Unger wrote.

In October 2021, City Club Apartments LLC announced a small-format Target store for its mixed-use project, the 350-unit City Club Apartments in Midtown. Plans called for a 32,000-square-foot store on the southeast corner of Mack and Woodward with a layout of stores of similar size across the country, about a quarter of the square footage of typical Target stores.

The outlet would bring Target back to Detroit for the first time in more than two decades. The discount retailer operated a store in the Bel Air shopping center on Eight Mile from October 1987 to August 2003.
