Lynn Jones – This year’s Essence Festival theme stayed true to their legacy of years of entertainment, workshops, panels, and small entrepreneurial events in the courtyards of New Orleans, Louisiana. The theme, “We Love Us,” was celebrated July 5-7 near the Mississippi River next to the French Quarters. Wanting a taste of the “we love us” scene, local Duval entrepreneurs Felicia Wright (Mygani) and Akim Wilson (Soulseed Apparel) hit the road to share their specialties. The entrepreneurs were energized to welcome guests to their booths. Soulseed Apparel has creative T-shirts featuring Harriet Tubman, black action figures/revolutionary figurines, and the infamous Wall Street bag from Tulsa, OK. “It was an amazing opportunity. We were thinking about signing up. This year we finally did it and we were glad we did,” Wilson smiled.

Felicia Wright’s vendor booth was organized around a lifestyle theme featuring custom illustrations of empowered and confident black women with naturally curly hair, with the goal of empowering women regardless of their hair texture or skin tone. While As she packed up her products and prepared to leave, Wright hurriedly invited her on stage to talk about her products, unique creations, and personal success story.

“I was really overwhelmed by the opportunity,” Wright said. Wright also boasts that her products were featured and promoted on lifestyle ambassador Tabitha Brown’s website Very good Mondays. Focusing on their booths and the dynamic atmosphere of the festival, the two entrepreneurs had the opportunity to check out celebrity guest panels, concerts, culinary options and networking opportunities, as well as visit the “We Came To Play” booth at Walt Disney Worlds.

The festival continues to focus on Essence Magazine’s 54-year history of championing Black girl magic around the world through its acclaimed magazine and the development of the Essence Festival.
