FC Dallas frustrated as US Open Cup dreams end

FC Dallas’ 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup saga came to a painful and frustrating end with a 2-1 overtime defeat to Sporting Kansas City. It was a match that tested the resilience, patience and determination of both teams, but the hosts ultimately took the lead thanks to a decisive goal from Dany Rosero in the 111th minute.

A break due to bad weather added an extra layer of tension to the match. When play finally resumed, the energy was high and the anticipation was palpable. However, extra time dealt Dallas a cruel blow. With minutes left, Dany Rosero rose highest to head in Johnny Russell’s corner kick, sealing the victory for Sporting Kansas City. It was a moment of pure emotion and frustration for Dallas, whose hopes were dashed after the goal.

Interim coach Peter Luccin expressed his disappointment after the match: “This match hurts because I felt we had many chances to score, even in the final moments. Speaking about the players’ attitude, I have only good things to say. Ultimately, the game is about scoring goals. We conceded a lot of goals and we always have to score three or four to win the match. Let’s go home, rest and focus on the next challenge.”

The frustration was palpable among Dallas’ players. Tsiki Ntsabeleng summed up the team’s feelings: “We were a little unlucky. We showed good character to come back, but as I said, we needed a little luck to get the ball down the line and get the second and third goals.”

Eugene Ansah, another of the team’s standouts, summed up the performance. As for the forward, the team managed to play a good role, showing the difference between playing in the US Open and in an MLS round.

“It was a better response to the last game we played here. It’s frustrating that we didn’t get a result. Personally, I think the team responded well. We have to focus on the details and just be strong. We have to do better in the next game.”

Despite the defeat, FC Dallas have plenty of positives to take from this campaign. Reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open Cup for the 17th time since 1996 is a remarkable achievement and shows the team’s consistency and ability in cup competitions. However, the reality is that football is a game of results and Dallas need to find ways to turn their good performances into consistent victories. In particular, the defence needs to be more solid, avoiding the need to score too many goals to make up for defensive mistakes.

The elimination from the US Open Cup is a blow, but also a learning experience. Coach Peter Luccin and his players must now focus on MLS, where there is still something to play for. With the season in full swing, every game is crucial, and Dallas must use the pain of this defeat as fuel to change its ambitions.
