MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of a woman shot and killed while working at a Church’s Chicken restaurant is mourning the tragic loss of a loved one while hoping the shooter is caught soon.

“Arnita’s there,” said Loranzo West Sr., Arnita’s father-in-law. “Those were good days. Great days.”

West Sr. fondly remembers Arnita, whom he has known since they were teenagers. He describes her as a person full of life and outgoing.

“She was a good girl. I’ll miss her. You always miss the ones that make things different. She wasn’t the type to just fit in. She was different. And when that one isn’t there, it’s like something’s missing,” West Sr. said. “I don’t have daughters-in-law, I have daughters. When she got married and came into the family, I told her, ‘You’re my daughter now.’

Arnita was shot and killed at Church’s Chicken on Park Avenue Monday night after an argument with a woman in a turquoise SUV. Police say the shooter with purple hair argued with West in the drive-thru, then returned and fired the fatal shot.

The restaurant remains closed as the investigation continues. West Sr. says he believes the suspect will be caught soon.

“If she’s running, she’ll get tired soon. She’s probably somewhere right now regretting what she did,” he said. “I guarantee you she regrets everything she did that night. She even regrets going there to get the chicken.”

In a statement, Church’s Texas Chicken said in part: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our team members. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family during this difficult time. We are working closely with the Memphis Police Department on the ongoing investigation.”

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
