Driver identified in fatal head-on collision in Antioch that left police officer seriously injured

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Metro Nashville Police Department has released the identity of the driver killed in a head-on collision in Antioch early Wednesday morning that left an officer seriously injured.

Police said 26-year-old Carlos D. Atilano was identified through fingerprints after the crash. Atilano was driving a Toyota Camry on Bell Road when it struck a curb, overcorrected and veered into the opposite lane of traffic, striking Sergeant Trevor VonDohlen’s patrol SUV.

The crash happened at Bell Road and Mt. View Road around 2:15 a.m. Atilano died at the scene.

VonDohlen is now a sergeant in the MNPD homicide unit. He remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious injuries, according to MNPD.

He is a 12-year veteran of the police department and at the time of the accident he was en route to Creekview Drive, where he apparently committed suicide.
