WHAT TO DO WITH MAEDA: Detroit Tigers’ Kenta Maeda has a 7.26 ERA in 16 starts. Will the team eat up the rest of his touches?

Game notes: The Detroit Tigers will wrap up their series against the Cleveland Guardians with an afternoon game on Thursday at Comerica Park.

Jack Flaherty returns to the mound for the Tigers after missing another start with a back injury. Flaherty last appeared for the Tigers on June 27 against the Los Angeles Angels, in a game in which he allowed seven hits and five runs. It was a stark difference from the Flaherty we saw earlier.

Flaherty missed some time after his June 4 start and didn’t return until June 15 after receiving an injection, but if you didn’t know better, you wouldn’t have any idea he was injured. In his May 30 start, Flaherty allowed just one hit and no runs over 6⅔ innings against the Boston Red Sox. He was brilliant again on June 4 against the Texas Rangers, allowing just two hits and no runs, but left the game after the fifth inning after throwing just 60 balls.

It was a sign that injury problems would soon arise.

Still, when Flaherty returned on June 15, he was another standout, holding the Houston Astros to a run with just three hits and then allowing just one hit and one run in the following game against the Chicago White Sox.

So given all of his recent dominance, it was especially surprising when Flaherty surrendered seven hits and five runs against an Angels team that had lost much of its firepower. But the outing made a lot more sense when the team announced that Flaherty had a setback and would miss his next start.

After a successful performance in the bullpen on Tuesday, we’ll see if Flaherty can return to the form he was in before the Los Angeles Angels game, or if his injury will continue to plague him.
