DETROIT — Jose Ramirez became just the second player to intentionally allow three walks and three hits in a game since Major League Baseball began tracking walks in 1955 when the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-8 in 10 innings on Tuesday night.

“He had a few balls to hit and he didn’t miss” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said.

Ramirez joins Paul Goldschmidt, who accomplished the feat for Arizona against Milwaukee in 2015, according to Sportradar. The Home Run Derby participant is also the first to have three intentional walks in a game since San Diego’s Jake Cronenworth did it nearly three years ago, according to Sportradar.

“That shows what I think of Ramirez” Said Tigers manager AJ Hinch.

Steven Kwan, who ranks first in the league with a .363 batting average, started the 10th inning with his third hit of the game.

Josh Naylor singled for his fourth RBI. Brayan Rocchio added a sacrifice fly to score Kwan in the extra inning for the AL Central-leading Guardians, who blew an early 6-0 lead.

Scott Barlow (3-3) walked in the ninth inning to secure the win, and Emmanuel Clase closed the game with his 28th save in 31 opportunities.

Clase delivered a sacrifice fly ball to Carson Kelly, scoring the automatic runner who advanced on a groundout, and two more singles before Justyn-Henry Malloy scored to end the game.

“I am incredibly proud of this group” Hinch said. “In the beginning we had a hole that kept getting bigger and bigger, and we kept working on it.”

Will Vest (1-3) took the loss, giving up two runs — one earned — on three hits and a walk over 1 1/3 innings.

Both starting pitchers allowed six runs on seven hits, with Cleveland brutalizing Kenta Maeda early and the Tigers brutalizing Ben Lively late in his outing.

Maeda, who had given up three runs on four hits in his first 14 pitches, lasted just 2 2/3 innings, spoiling a night in which he joined Yu Darvish and Hideo Nomo as the three major league players born in Japan with 1,000 strikeouts.

Lively started off relatively strong, but allowed a two-run home run to Colt Keith in the third inning and a three-run home run to Gio Urshela in the sixth inning.

Nick Sandlin came on for Lively and allowed a game-tying homerun by Malloy, a rookie who had jumped the fence five times in 28 games.

TRAINER’S OFFICE

Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty is on track to play against Cleveland on Thursday after playing in the bullpen without a sore back.

“Very encouraging” Hinch said.
