Community on edge as thieves target homes in Detroit’s Boston Edison neighborhood

DETROIT – Neighbors are upset after thieves robbed about a dozen homes in Detroit Boston Edison District.

Detroit police confirm “several break-ins” in the area over the past few weeks.

One of the homeowners who was burglarized told Local 4 the thieves pepper-sprayed their dogs before ransacking the upstairs.

“What if I walk in and he’s there?” asked the homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous. “I don’t know what would happen. If he’s willing to pepper-spray my dog, I don’t know what he’s willing to do to me.”

The homeowner said police told him it was part of a new trend in the area.

“He allegedly committed 12 robberies in the last few weeks,” the homeowner said. “(Police) said he probably left the home with more than $70,000 and probably stole $150,000 worth of jewelry, according to police.”

Detroit police told Local 4 they are following up on leads but would not provide details to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Like many others in the community, the homeowner decided to arrest the suspects before they could cause further damage.

“It is impossible to stop all robberies, but in the case of such serial robberies it is necessary to deal with them because the thief is a threat to the local community,” the homeowner said.

Anyone with information should contact their local police department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up.
