Columbus Blue Jackets Narrow Head Coaching Search

The Columbus Blue Jackets are the only team in the NHL without a head coach. After firing Pascal Vincent after his first season behind the bench, the Blue Jackets have yet to find his replacement.

Speculation about the next head coaching pick continues as the Blue Jackets remain quiet. According to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, the team is still narrowing down its list. The latest information is that a potential option is already out of the game.

Sharing an update via his X account, Portzline reported that Todd McLellan is no longer a candidate. According to Portzline, the two sides could not agree on a multi-year contract and negotiations broke down.

“#CBJ, McLellan and his former club, #GoKingsGo, have failed to reach an agreement on a multi-year contract,” Portzline wrote on Twitter. “It’s possible #CBJ will return with a tailored offer.”

McLellan most recently coached the Los Angeles Kings. He took over in 2019-20 and led the Kings to the postseason in two of his four full seasons with the team. He was fired in 2023-24 after 48 games. He won 168 games during his tenure with the Kings and is known for being a flexible coach who can lead the team to the postseason.

With McLellan out, the Blue Jackets lose two coaching options. Recently reinstated coach Joel Quenneville was another rumored option for the job. However, the Jackets have not made him any offers. They will likely stay away from negative press about Quenneville as their organizational rebuild continues. With another candidate off the board, the Blue Jackets must continue their head coaching search.
