Colombia beat Uruguay 1-0 in front of 70,644 fans at Bank of America Stadium in the semifinals of the Copa America. Billed as the “most prestigious soccer match” ever hosted by the city of Charlotte, the stadium, “largely decked out in yellow,” celebrated Colombia’s advancement to Miami, where it will face reigning world and Copa America champions Argentina on Sunday. Uruguay “will stay in Charlotte and face Canada” in the third-place match in the tournament on Saturday (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/10).

Anger and violence ‘poured from the pitch into the stands’ after the final whistle as Uruguay lost Darwin Nunez and “a dozen or so” of his teammates were involved in “post-match chaos… in the stands, scuffling with fans while beer was being thrown.” “It took police more than 10 minutes to arrive at the scene and restore order.” The stadium announcer asked fans to leave, “but a few fans remained.” Uruguay D Jose Maria Gimenez said the players were “trying to protect their families in the stands” (WASHINGTON POST, 7/11).
