Cleveland Browns’ decision on key cornerback hailed as best move of offseason

The Cleveland Browns won 11 games last year thanks to a stout defense, so it was obvious they would focus on that side of the football this offseason.

That’s why re-signing defensive quarterback Za’Darius Smith to a two-year, $23 million contract seemed like an obvious move for the Browns.

Trevvor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus was so thrilled with the Browns’ decision to keep Smith that he called it the club’s best decision of the offseason.

Sikkema even went as far as to say that re-signing Smith is “underrated.”

Smith didn’t put up impressive numbers in 2023, tallying 27 tackles and 5.5 sacks, but there’s no doubt he had an impact on the game, totaling 60 pressures and 20 quarterback hits.

Cleveland first signed the 31-year-old as a free agent last year.

Smith played for a total of four NFL teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, before joining the Browns.

The University of Kentucky alum has recorded three double-digit sack campaigns during his NFL career, peaking at 13.5 sacks in 2019. He also totaled 10 sacks in 2022 during his lone season with the Vikings.

Smith also has three Pro Bowl appearances and was selected to the All-Pro second team.

With Myles Garrett, Smith and other young players like Alex Wright, the Browns boast one of the best offensive groups in the NFL.

The ability to wreak havoc on opposing defences is one of the main reasons the club finished first in defence last season.

We’ll see what Smith can bring to the Browns in Year 2.
