Charlotte Gets New Waste Collection Contractor – Inside UNC Charlotte

If you’re on campus this summer, you might have noticed new containers and trucks. On Monday, July 1, the University’s waste collection agreements went into effect, splitting the services between two companies.

Crown Waste and Recycling Systems LLC, a Charlotte-based, woman-owned company serving Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, empties campus dumpsters. Republic Services continues to handle cardboard dumpsters, recycling, and large projects and events. Republic has provided waste collection services to UNC Charlotte for decades.

The contracts include new or refurbished trash containers to improve campus aesthetics. Crown Waste and Recycling delivered black trash containers to campus to begin work. Republic Services plans to replace its trash containers and roll-off containers with freshly painted equipment in the next few months.

The new contracts are designed to improve campus waste management efficiency through improved data collection. To make sure you’re sending the right materials to the right containers, use the Campus Waste Wizard tool. Simply type in an item and the wizard will guide you through how to properly dispose of it on campus.
