Car crashes into building on Keystone and Washington in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Indy firefighters said fortunately no one was injured Wednesday when a 22-year-old learner-driver crashed a local dealership’s car into a Near East Side restaurant during a test drive, missing a person in an electric wheelchair and a man with an inflatable boat.

Indianapolis Fire Department crews were called around noon to the El Paseo Catracho restaurant at Washington Street and Keystone Avenue after a car crashed into the building. No one was injured in the crash, but the building sustained significant structural damage, according to the IFD.

Officers posted on social media that the driver involved in the crash was a 22-year-old woman who had only a learner’s license and was reportedly testing a dealership car with a licensed passenger inside.

According to the IFD, the woman told firefighters she was making a right turn from Keystone Avenue onto Washington Street and lost control of her car before hitting the building.

Surveillance video of the incident, provided by IFD and shown below, shows the car narrowly missing a wheelchair user on the sidewalk and an inflatable man in front of the restaurant.

Officials said there were no customers inside the restaurant and neither the driver nor a passenger were injured. Indianapolis Metro Police are currently investigating the crash, the IFD said.
