DETROIT — Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons have agreed to a five-year contract extension worth at least $224 million, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The deal could total nearly $270 million if Cunningham is eligible for a supermax contract extension, according to two people who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not yet announced an agreement.

ESPN was the first to report on the agreement, which will take effect in the 2025-26 season.

Detroit selected Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft, and the former Oklahoma State star found individual success amidst tough times for the three-time NBA champion.

The 6-foot-3 point guard averaged 20 points, 6.5 assists and five rebounds during his career, which includes an injury-shortened sophomore season.

The Pistons are clearly including Cunningham in their next rebuilding effort, which is being led by new president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon and coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

After finishing with the league’s worst record for the second straight year, Detroit fired general manager Troy Weaver after four years of inefficiency and coach Monty Williams after just one season.

Langdon had been busy trying to surround Cunningham with outside hitters who would be part of a desperately needed influx of talent.

He signed former Pistons forward Tobias Harris to a two-year, $52 million contract, acquired Tim Hardaway Jr. from Dallas in a trade, extended a qualifying offer to Simone Fontecchio and selected G League Ignite’s Ron Holland with the fifth pick in the draft.

The Pistons haven’t won a playoff game since 2008, when they reached their sixth straight Eastern Conference finals, and have finished last in the Central Division for the past four seasons.

Cunningham, a native of Arlington, Texas, lived up to his billing, appearing in two of the three years.

He was limited to 12 games in his sophomore season due to a stress fracture in his left leg. After returning from the injury, he averaged 22.7 points and 7.5 rebounds last season, along with 4.3 rebounds per game.

Cunningham was unanimously named to the 2022 NBA All-Rookie First Team after averaging 17.4 points, 5.6 assists and 5.5 rebounds,Cade Cunningham signs 5-year, 4 million contract with Detroit Pistons | News, Sports, Jobs
