BALTIMORE — The state of Maryland and Howard County just received federal funding to purchase two “heavy” buses to extend the Route 1 bus line in Howard County to Baltimore County.

A $960,000 grant will extend Route 409 by five miles, from Elkridge to Lansdowne Station, allowing passengers to connect to public transportation in Baltimore City.

U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and U.S. Congressmen John Sarbanes and Kweisi Mfume (all Democrats, Maryland) announced the funding today.

Sarbanes said the project would “increase access to transportation locations and services in and around Baltimore” and also accomplish other goals.

Route 409 currently operates approximately once an hour on weekdays and every two hours on Saturdays. It is part of the Regional Transportation Authority of Central Maryland, which operates buses between Columbia and the Savage/Jessup/Odenton/Hanover/Elkridge/Laurel areas.
