As one of the first cities in the country, Bostonians already know their city is special. We don’t need anyone to tell us.

Still, it’s nice to hear it.

Online travel magazine Travel + Leisure has named Boston one of the top 15 cities in the United States in its World’s Best 2024 rankings.

The results are based on reader surveys in which cities were given ratings in each of the categories – landmarks/historical landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping and value. The average of each response was used to determine the city’s final rating.

As writer Elizabeth Cantrell argues, the common thread among all the cities chosen is a “strong identity and a sense that the city is different from any other city in the country.”

Why They Loved Boston

Boston came in 14th with a reader score of 80.75, down from 12th place last year, but its historical significance and burgeoning North End culinary scene helped it stay on the list.

What did they say: “This New England capital captivates all types of travelers, whether you’re a history buff looking to hike the Freedom Trail, a baseball fan looking to catch a game at Fenway Park, or a foodie looking for the best Italian food in the North End. “It’s the perfect blend of old and new,” says one reader. Visitors also appreciate that this walkable city has distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique feel. Boston has also welcomed several noteworthy hotels in recent years, including the first Raffles hotel in North America, which opened in September of this year.”

Cantrell said readers are looking for “tangible history, walkable city centers, regional cuisine, and vibrant arts and cultural institutions,” and Boston has all of those in abundance.
