Detroit, MI – January 10, 2024

GameAbove Sports, a sports-focused business development and strategic investment entity, announces the acquisition of a fourth BIG3 franchise with plans to base a team in Detroit representing Michigan in the 2025 season. The GameAbove Sports ownership group, led by Founder and Chairman Keith J. Stone, is comprised of individuals with deep ties to the region and a solid sense of operational, business, basketball and sports savvy; including Detroit sports greats, NBA Hall of Fame inductee and BIG3 coach George Gervin and two-time NFL Pro-Bowler and Super Bowl Champion TJ Lang, as well as Joe Januszewski, Karen LeVert, Dan McClory, Skyler Stone, Corey Welch and Born in Detroit apparel co-founder Anthony Tomey. Former NBA point guard Earl Boykins will also be involved in the organization.

“The entire GameAbove team and I are excited to bring a BIG3 franchise to the Motor City,” said Gervin. “My experience as a BIG3 member over the past few seasons has shown me that the league is at the forefront of the growing growth of 3-on-3 basketball and its global appeal. Detroit’s rich sports history makes it a fantastic market for the BIG3; get ready for next summer!”

The announcement follows the acquisition of the rights to the LA, Miami and Houston BIG3 franchises earlier this year. The league is currently in the fifth week of its seventh season of BIG3, which continues to tour the country and reach millions of fans across linear, streaming and digital platforms.

“I am thrilled to finally announce the sale of our Detroit team to this incredible group of investors, entrepreneurs and philanthropists,” said BIG3 CEO and co-founder Ice Cube. “GameAbove Sports and its leadership team embody the values of BIG3 every day and have an exemplary community outreach infrastructure that will take the Young3 initiative to the next level. It has been an honor to work with George Gervin over the past several seasons of BIG3 and I know what he means to the Detroit community and Southeast Michigan. I look forward to working with GameAbove Sports to make the vision of BIG3 Detroit a reality next season.”

Since its inception, GameAbove has donated millions to causes and initiatives in Southeast Michigan, including social impact funds for students, combating food insecurity, mental health, STEM education and youth literacy, youth sports and scholarships.

About BIG3

On January 11, 2017, BIG3 was born. The first professional FIREBALL3 league was the brainchild of producer, actor, and music legend Ice Cube and entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz, who shared a vision for a player-centric league focused on entertainment and innovation. BIG3 is a no-minutes league where trash talk is allowed, defense is emphasized, fast-paced action is played, and every point, whether it’s a 4-pointer or a 3-pointer, matters. Each BIG3 team features Hall of Famers, Icons, and Pioneers, as well as the Best 3-on-3 Player.

The league has led the sports industry in diversity and opportunity, becoming the first professional sports league to implement a mental health policy, favor CBD as an alternative to opioids for pain management, hire female coaches, and appoint a Black commissioner in Hall of Fame inductee Clyde Drexler, who is also the first former professional athlete to serve as commissioner. The first CEO was legendary, incomparable Raider executive Amy Trask. In January 2024, BIG3 co-founder Ice Cube was honored at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, where he received the inaugural Ice Cube Impact Award, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to their community, the first player to be recognized. Founders Ice Cube and Jeffrey Kwatinetz are on a mission to improve society as the BIG3 strives for business success while helping to break stereotypes, promote diversity in sports, create opportunities for Black, Brown and female athletes off the court, and support the Black, youth and basketball communities at large.
