Australian TV show ‘Austin’ is taken over by BBC

New Australian comedy series Austin has been picked up by British public broadcaster BBC.

An eight-part drama series produced by Northern Pictures and Lincoln Pictures, starring Ben Miller, Sally Phillips and Love on the spectrum Favorite Michael Theo.

Now, thanks to a new acquisition from ITV Studios, Austin will be available on BBC iPlayer and TV channels.

The series was created and written by Darren Ashton (“Spreadsheet”), Ben Miller (“The Armstrong and Miller Show”), Lloyd Woolf, Joe Tucker (“Black Ops”), Adam Zwar (“Squinters”) and Kala Ellis (“Spreadsheet”).

“Austin” is the story of popular children’s author Julian Hartswood (Ben Miller) who inadvertently causes a social media storm, a moment of stupidity that threatens to prematurely end the careers of the author and his wife, illustrator Ingrid (Sally Phillips).

The title role is played by Michael Theo, the neuroatypical son whose existence Julian never knew about.

DNA tests, awkward family dinners and courtship moments follow, and Austin ends up in the UK, where he embarks on a journey he describes as “the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Filmed in Canberra and produced by Northern Pictures in association with Lincoln Pictures for the ABC, Austin received significant production support from the ABC in association with Screen Australia, the Australian Capital Territory Government and Screen Canberra, and post-production assistance from the New South Wales Government in association with ITV Studios.

Catherine Nebauer, head of scriptwriting at Northern Pictures, said of the acquisition:

“The BBC is the perfect platform for Austin and we have no doubt that viewers will appreciate the inventive blend of British and Australian humour. With a brilliant cast and production team, Austin has already proven to be a hit on ABC with local audiences and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Series co-creator Darren Ashton and “Austin” star Michael Theo recently appeared on Variety’s AU?NZ podcast.

Recorded by JMC Academy students studying Audio Engineering and Film & Television, this podcast takes an in-depth look at the making of ‘Austin’ and provides a hands-on learning experience for budding creatives based at JMC’s Sydney campus.
