Activists protest for Gaza ceasefire at NATO summit in Washington

Demonstrators gathered near a hotel in the US and used loudspeakers to protest against hosting members of the NATO military alliance.

Protesters are demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for the second day in a row, as the NATO military alliance summit takes place in the United States.

The activist said the protesters opposed Western military spending and intended to continue civilian action.

The incident came after US intelligence chief Avril Haines accused “Iranian government officials” of “trying to exploit the ongoing protests over the war in the Gaza Strip.”

“We have noticed that online, individuals associated with the Iranian government are posing as activists, trying to encourage protests, and even providing financial support to protesters,” she said in a statement Tuesday.

However, Haines acknowledged that the Americans taking part in the protests “acted in good faith in expressing their views on the conflict in Gaza.”

Washington and Tehran have long been enemies. While Iran is Israel’s main enemy, the U.S. is its main supporter, including in the war in Gaza.

NATO Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and officials discuss further military, financial and political support from the alliance for Kyiv to strengthen its capabilities against Russia.

In 2022, Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbor.

The White House said allies would announce at least 40 billion euros ($43 billion) in financial support over the next year, as well as new measures that would lead to Ukraine joining NATO.

According to the Palestinian enclave’s health ministry, at least 38,295 people have died in Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip so far.

The NATO summit is being held in Washington to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the alliance.
