54-foot boat stuck in Detroit River near Belle Isle

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit officers are warning boaters on the Detroit River to avoid a boat stuck near a city park.

Coast Guard officials said a crew from the Belle Isle station and the Detroit harbormaster rescued about 20 people Sunday from a 54-foot boat that began to sink and take on water near Erma Henderson Park.

The crew boarded the ship and noticed flooding in the engine room of the damaged ship. As a precaution, all those on board were asked to leave.

Authorities said the boat sank before any attempts could be made to drain the water.

“The vessel is currently resting on the riverbed in the northeastern part of the Scott Middle Ground, partially submerged,” the Coast Guard said in a statement. “A water barrier has been placed around the vessel and no signs of pollution have been reported, but the situation is being monitored.”

The company also said it was working with the vessel’s owner to ensure its safe removal.

In the meantime, all mariners are urged to exercise caution when transiting the area and avoid approaching the vessel.
