An Arkansas couple is facing a series of felony charges in the death of their 2-year-old son, who died of heat exhaustion after he and three of his siblings were left unattended in a hot car parked in the parking lot of a children’s hospital.

Justin Rollins and Deja Rollins — who were in the hospital with a 3-year-old child they are accused of abusing — were arrested over the weekend and charged with one count each of aggravated murder in connection with the death of young Jay’Dien Rollins, authorities said.

According to a press release from the City of Little Rock and the Jacksonville Police Department, officers responded to a call Sunday afternoon, July 7, regarding a 3-year-old patient at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) who may have been a victim of abuse and neglect. The 3-year-old suffered injuries that required “urgent medical treatment,” Jacksonville police said.

Both parents have been arrested in connection with the alleged abuse of the 3-year-old, and police have launched an investigation to establish whether the couple have other children.

“During the investigation, officers discovered the couple had four other children, ages 2, 4, 7 and 10,” Jacksonville police said. “At the time of the parents’ arrest, Justin and Deja Rollins were uncooperative in providing the location of the other children.”

Authorities said the children were eventually found because all four accompanied their parents to a children’s hospital.

At approximately 12:42 p.m., Little Rock police officers were also dispatched to Children’s Hospital and “reviewed a report from the Jacksonville Police Department regarding child abuse involving Justin and Deja Rollins.”

Upon arrival at the facility, Little Rock officers were contacted by hospital security who reported receiving a call from Jacksonville police around 12:30 p.m. about four children trapped in a vehicle in the parking lot. The outside temperature in Little Rock that day had reached a high of 92 degrees.

Police and security located the vehicle and removed all victims from the heated vehicle. All four children appeared to be suffering from heat exhaustion and were taken to hospital for treatment while police watched them.

Despite receiving medical attention at a hospital, the couple’s 2-year-old son — later identified as Jay’Dien — succumbed to his injuries Monday and was pronounced dead. Homicide detectives began investigating the death, executed search warrants and filed a probable cause statement with the Pulaski County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police searched the Rollins home and found a malnourished dog, which was taken into the care of Jacksonville Animal Services.

The Pulaski County Coroner recovered Jay’Dien’s body from the hospital and transported it to the Arkansas State Crime Lab, where an autopsy will be performed.

In addition to the aggravated murder charges, Deja and Justin Rollins are charged with five counts of first-degree domestic violence, five counts of neglect of a defenseless person, five counts of endangering a minor, one count of cruelty to animals and one count of obstructing governmental operations.

The pair are currently being held without bail at the Pulaski County Jail, documents show. It was unclear when they would appear in court.
