JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — A sailor and a good Samaritan are speaking out after a boat with five men on board capsized off the coast of Florida.

Mohammad El Itani and Brandon Parson shared their stories for the first time earlier this week. El Itani and four other fishermen were stranded in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after their 24-foot vessel capsized off the coast of Jacksonville on Sunday.

An audio recording captured one of the sailors’ desperate cries for help.

“It’s like drowning,” said one of the rescued fishermen.

“OK, where are you?” the 911 dispatcher asked.

“We are on a boat,” said the fisherman.

“OK, where are you?” the dispatcher asked.

“We’re at the boat. We’re at the boat. We’re with the boat. We’re on the boat. Oh my God,” the fisherman said.

Five fishermen crowded onto the capsized boat and radioed for help.

“Then we put on our jackets and the boat immediately capsized and we managed to stay on the boat, I mean, upside down,” El Itani said.

But Parson and the other fishermen were aboard another boat that was at the right place and time to spot the stranded sailors.

“I see a boat in the distance,” said the fisherman.

“They are anchored, but the boat is upside down,” another fisherman said.

As soon as the stranded sailors saw the second boat, they did everything they could to attract its attention and call for help.

“I’m sitting here and I’m watching, and before I know it, I see people like this, waving, ‘Hey,’” Parson said. “I jump up and say, ‘Wow, what’s going on?’”

A group of friends immediately took action as the trapped men were barely hanging on to the sinking boat.

“I bless you all,” said one of the rescued fishermen.

“We won’t leave you here,” the man said.

The men waited by the capsized boat until the U.S. Coast Guard arrived.

“It was like that, really — we saw three boats all day, so if it wasn’t for us, there would have been no other chance,” Parson said. “It was like the grace of God that we ended up there.”

The family of the trapped fishermen said a pump failure may have been the cause of the boat capsizing.
