Series of shootings appear to target random drivers and cyclists in Charlotte; police offer reward

One person was killed and several injured Tuesday morning.

Police in Charlotte, North Carolina, are asking for the public’s help in solving a series of shootings that occurred over the course of 30 minutes and appeared to be targeting random drivers and cyclists.

The shooting began shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday when the victim was shot while driving, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said. The shots apparently came from another car, police said.

Minutes later, officers responded to a call about a bicyclist who said he had been shot, police said. The victim was not injured, police said. That shooting also appeared to come from a car, Deputy Chief Tonya Arrington said.

A short time later, the driver told police his car had been hit by gunfire, police said. He was also not injured.

While investigating the third incident, officers responded to a report of a group of people who said they were standing outside when someone in a car fired multiple shots at them, police said. Officers found the victim inside a nearby home who had been shot and survived with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The latest shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m., when a bicyclist was shot, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

“Detectives believe the shootings may be related,” police said in a statement.

“If you look at the homicide that kind of started this and then you look at the series of shootings, we looked at MO, MO — shooting from a vehicle at our victims. Proximity — those first three that I discussed were in a small location in a metropolitan area,” Arrington said. “The time frame — we’re talking about 30 minutes. That’s a short time frame to have that many shootings, including a homicide.”

Arrington added that the shooter likely targeted drivers and cyclists, but that the victims were unrelated.

The evidence collected “linked these cases,” Arrington said.

Police said a $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest.

Police do not have a suspect or a description of the suspect’s vehicle, Arrington said. The police department is asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
