Church’s Chicken employee dies after altercation with drive-thru customer

An argument between Church’s Chicken employee Anitra West and a customer turned deadly Monday night (July 8), after local authorities in Memphis say the customer shot West. She was later pronounced dead.

The fatal shooting happened just before 9 p.m. at a downtown Memphis fast food chain. Officers responded to a call and found West with at least one gunshot wound. The initial investigation shows that West was working in the drive-thru when a woman with purple hair pulled up in a “turquoise SUV” and the two got into a verbal argument.

As reported USA todayA statement from authorities read: “A teal SUV drove out of the parking lot and the victim exited the business for air. A gunshot was heard moments later and the footage showed the teal SUV driving out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed.”

A Church’s Chicken spokesperson issued a statement on the matter, according to Action News 5. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our team members. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time. … Our location at 2963 Park Avenue will be closed for the next several days as we address the needs of the victim’s family and our team members.”

West’s family described the 48-year-old mother as a “bright light and a beautiful soul.” Her ex, Loranzo, told the outlet: “It doesn’t feel real yet because we haven’t been able to see her. I’m a better person because of her. That’s what we’ll miss the most because wherever she went, she had an impact on everyone.”

They share a 12-year-old daughter and were high school sweethearts. No arrests have been made, but the vehicle in question has been recovered.
