Burnes and Imanaga clash in Baltimore

Cubs vs. Orioles, 6:35 ET

Cubs vs. Orioles, 6:35 ET

Well, that hot streak will have to wait another day, because yesterday I was only 0-1-1. The loss came in a Braves vs. Diamondbacks game that was a 7.5-run game with eight runs scored. It’s amazing how often you feel like it’s a bad game, but if the game had ended 5-2 instead of 6-2, I wouldn’t consider it a lucky win. Also, the Giants and Blue Jays had a combined seven runs scored in the game, and I had the over. Most of those runs came late in the game, so I was lucky there. Let’s ignore the luck tonight and just take the win when the Cubs take on the Orioles.

The Cubs are at a critical point in their season. They are currently 43-49, good for fifth in the NL Central. There are only five teams in the NL Central, so for those who can’t figure it out, that puts them in last place. The Brewers are in the lead, and the Cardinals are on Milwaukee’s tail. The Pirates and Reds are also below .500, but are playing better than the Cubs. The expectation going into the season was that they would have a team that was on the verge of making the playoffs last year, so they made very few changes. In my opinion, that was a huge mistake. They have the resources and the skill set to field a great team, but they tinkered with it instead of making big plays for the players. Now they have to decide if they can make a run and get back to .500, or if they want to trade up and hope for next year. They’ve been playing better lately, which makes it harder for management to decide. The Cubs have won four of their last five games, but are just 6-9 in their last 15. Shota Imanaga is on the mound tonight. After looking like the best pitcher in baseball until late May, he’s struggled a bit in the last month or so. He’s allowed 12 runs in his first 10 starts and 20 in his last six. To be fair, 10 of those runs have come in one start. In fact, 17 of the 32 runs he’s allowed have come in 7.1 innings, while the other 15 have come in 83.2 innings of work. So basically, if he’s bad, he’s really bad. If he’s good, he’s really good. The Cubs are 12-4 in his starts this season.

The Orioles are currently in first place in the AL East, and that battle will likely continue all season long as the Yankees and they battle for division position. The good news is that they are almost certain to make the playoffs. They certainly won’t be trading away any more players at the deadline, but they could be getting rid of a few of their bigger prospects and putting their team in an even better position to make the playoffs. I will say that I think the team could use another starting pitcher if they can find a top-tier pitcher. I don’t think they should settle for a mediocre pitcher for the club. They made a splash this offseason by acquiring Corbin Burnes from the Brewers, and if they make another move like that, they could be considered a World Series favorite. In my opinion, this team is the most complete team in baseball if they can get another true ace. Burnes starts tonight against the Cubs. He’s been nothing short of phenomenal for the Orioles. He is currently 9-3 with a 2.32 ERA, good for second in Major League Baseball, and a 1.02 WHIP, good for 11th. He has fared even better at home this season, with an overall ERA of 1.78 and giving up just 12 earned runs in 60.2 innings in 10 starts. The Cubs, who faced him multiple times while he was with the Brewers, have done well against him, allowing 31 hits in 110 at-bats.

The total score for this game is 8.5 for the entire game and 4.5 for the first five innings. The price for the first five innings is a bit too juicy in this case, but 3.5 is a bit risky because I could see three runs allowed by Imanaga and one by Burnes. Unfortunately, the Cubs don’t have a reliable bullpen, so it’s a bit risky to take the under for the entire game. I think seeing how the Cubs have hit Burnes in the past and how they’ve been playing lately, they could win the game and have some value at +154. The official game would be the under 8.5 for this game at +100 because I think teams will have trouble with starting pitching. I just have to hope the bullpen can hold them off.
