The champion Denver Nuggets make a decision on player options

Denver Nuggets guard Reggie Jackson will pick up his player option worth $5.25 million for next season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The 34-year-old spent the last season and a half with the Nuggets and was with them when the team won its first franchise championship in 2023. In his Nuggets career so far, Jackson has averaged 9.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

Jackson provided the Nuggets with presence and veteran depth off the bench. However, he also started in Jamal Murray’s place multiple times.

Reggie Jackson wasn’t expected to have a big role in 2023-24

Since joining the Nuggets, Jackson has been benched and only started games when needed. In the 2023 NBA Finals, Jackson appeared in just six games throughout the entire postseason. Additionally, he averaged 3 minutes and less than 1 point per game. He wasn’t expected to play a big role in the Nuggets’ title defense last season. However, Jackson had a productive season with the team and even appeared in all 12 of Denver’s playoff games. During the postseason, Jackson made it clear that he did not expect to take on a larger role.

“No, definitely not. We have one of the best point guards in the league. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the healthiest season for him, so I’m happy to step up and do my part.”

By taking away his player option, Jackson had just one year left on his contract. The Boston College product will continue to provide depth to the team. Additionally, it looks like he’s prepared to take on a bigger role again next season if needed.

Denver Nuggets free agent roster except Reggie Jackson

Now that Jackson has agreed, the Nuggets will have as many as seven free agents this offseason. Defenseman Kentavious Caldwell-Pope also has a player option for this season. Reports recently indicated that the Philadelphia 76ers would likely pursue him this summer. It will be interesting to see what Caldwell-Pope does and where he plays basketball next season. Additionally, DeAndre Jordan, Justin Holiday and Vlatko Cancar are unrestricted free agents. However, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic, the Nuggets and Cancar are “working on” a new contract. Additionally, Collin Gillespie, Jay Huff and Braxton Key will be restricted free agents this summer.

The last word on Reggie Jackson

Jackson returning to Denver for another season is a good thing for the team. He gives a lot on the pitch and knows the system. With the status of his contract for next season now firmly established, the Nuggets can cross one priority off their offseason to-do list. After a disappointing elimination to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the playoffs during the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Nuggets will look to bounce back and return to the NBA Finals.
