Short North mass shooting suspect in custody, residents want to make neighborhood safer

On Monday morning, a man suspected of a mass shooting in the Short North, which resulted in the death of 10 people, appeared in court.

Deangelo Fuller, 19, of Groveport, turned himself in to Columbus police on Sunday. He identified himself as the getaway driver during the shooting. The white Honda Civic used in the attack was also recovered.

Fuller is currently charged with obstructing official business. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 2.

The U.S. Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms has offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of more suspects.

Jack Decker, president of the Short North Civic Association, said the organization plans to work with neighborhood associations, the Short North Alliance and the city of Columbus to implement a community-wide effort to address recurring violence.

The Short North Alliance reiterated in a statement to WOSU that it is “committed to ensuring the Short North remains a safe and vibrant area to visit” and that it is “working with the Columbus Police to understand how and why this incident occurred to better prevent future threats and make our dynamic community even safer.”

Decker acknowledged the police’s limitations, saying, “I’m not an expert in this area. There are limits to what you can do, especially when there are a lot of bullets coming out of the car.”

Instead, Decker emphasized the need to change neighborhood conditions to reduce the likelihood of violence. “Whether it is about managing traffic differently or changing the population of bars and clubs on the High Street, we need to consider all options.”

In May 2023, one person was killed and at least 10 were injured in two shootings in two weeks along North High Street in the Short North. Police presence increased as a result, but Decker said this weekend’s shooting occurred on the outskirts of a “heavily policed area.”

“We must explore all possible options and work together as a community to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents,” Decker said.
